But not in the Common Pasture! The economic, historic and stewardship importance of This historic agricultural landscape, largely unchanged in 300 years, and recognized as a “Distinctive” Massachusetts landscape, a category representing only 4% of Massachusetts landscapes. As the gateway to our area, it sets the tone of “home” for the communities of Newbury and Newburyport, as part of our heritage – our identity. It also has significant environmental value, particularly as flood protection and moist grassland habitat, unequaled in Eastern Massachusetts. Over a million dollars has already been invested to protect parcels in the Common Pasture as they have become available. Many hours and many dollars have been invested by individuals, organizations, foundations, and financial institutions to protect this unique community resource. I’d be glad to talk with you about the importance of the Common Pasture.
