I just received the notification on the NRA meeting for September 12th.

I was horrified.

This confirms my decision to largely stay out of the Waterfront debate.    My conclusion has been that, when all is said and done, the whole thing will be ground to a halt with a lawsuit.

Well, it’s like James Shanley is walking around with a piece of paper stuck to his back, with the writing, “Sue me”.       This often occurs with very smart* people.     They often act with arrogance and then proceed forthwith under the same air.        And this is a very stupid thing to do.

No diplomacy, no obtuse statements, not even some political wisdom.

If you don’t believe me, read it yourself:

Dear Fellow Newburyporter,

The Newburyport Redevelopment Authority is working to complete the urban renewal project that restored Newburyport’s downtown.

We’d like your help.

Next month, on Sept. 12, we’ll present a concept plan that would expand Market Landing Park, creating a landmark link in the bike path chain being constructed through our city.

In addition to establishing park and paths along the waterfront, the NRA is working with the City of Newburyport and the State of Massachusetts to expand the vitality of our downtown.

The concept plans calls for building new shops, restaurants and residences on a portion of the existing parking lots. This not only will create dynamic new energy along Merrimac Street but also will generate new taxes for the city. [my bold facing]

We’re approaching a critical stage of this effort, and we continue to want the public to be involved. As part of our outreach we created this email effort to keep Newburyport residents up-to-date on our progress.

We hope you find this information valuable. [I certainly did – I won’t waste any more posts on this subject!]

please join us on Sept. 12 at The Firehouse for a presentation of the plan crafted by our architect Union Studios. The meeting starts at 7 pm.
