Now normally, I would have a devilish good time when covering such a subject, but in this case I am dead serious. I realized this post is extremely important after reading Mary Eaton’s blog today. And also, in the coming months as emotions rather than reason begin to take over.
I hope this lesson on idiocy will sink in not to just her but to the rest of those who are trying to promote good and beneficial things for Newburyport.
Let’s take it from another pseudo-anonymous writer, Mark Twain:
“Never argue with a fool, onlookers may not be able to tell the difference.”
This quote deals with the false assumption that you are dealing with a rational person who sincerely wants to know the truth and run with it. The fact that you are trying to reason with an idiot is madness in the first place. Only an idiot would waste his time trying to do that. (My point entirely)
Now there are sincere and thoughtful people out there who really want to be informed – so how do you know how to weed out those who are idiots?
It is important to identify an idiot so that onlookers (the citizens of Newburyport) don’t get confused.
Here are indications that you are wasting your time:
- Acts like he knows what he’s talking about, but really has no idea.
- Doesn’t have the intelligence to be able to make sound conclusions based off of logic and reasoning.
- Only acknowledges facts that support his or her claims and ignores the facts that contradict it.
- Lets his or her personal bias blind him or her from reality.
- Changes what he is arguing about when proven wrong.
Most times idiots aren’t easily identifiable. The best thing is to look instead for people who hide behind stereotypes, embrace partisanship rather clumsily, and believe that bumper sticker slogans are a substitute for common sense. Of course, with Occupy Wall Street on the left and the John Birch Society on the right, it’s certainly getting easier.
Now believe it or not (for those who lean to the left); Glenn Beck
has stumbled upon the secret formula to winning arguments against people with big mouths and small minds:
knowing the facts.
There is a lot of emotions and passion when dealing on political issues. As it turns out, those who have taken up the mantle to promote their views whether left or right are only a minority. Most of the decision will be done by a large group of onlookers and they desperately crave information so they can make an intelligent choice. The idiots have but one goal – to fool enough people into agreeing with their position.
And the onlookers once they have identified who is an idiot can get very angry when they find out that someone is assuming their gullibility.
So the best thing to do is to arm yourself with facts, continue the hard work of informing the citizens and DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH IDIOTS!
