Keep a watchful eye but there is ‘hope’.

Meet Michael and Richard Greene:

Michael & Richard Green - new owners

These are the men who are now the new owners of the Oleo Woods Subdivision.

I realize that businesses can sound very good on their websites and be basically full of ‘crap’; but one thing is true is the old saying by Abraham Lincoln, “You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.”    Even in the wild field of home building construction, a good tract record is the best record for success and these guys have been pretty successful.

Their website, www.greenandcompany.com has some encouraging statements such as a dedication to preserving the environment.       Unlike the irritating statements made by the Daily News, this development is close to some very environmentally-sensitive lands.      Most of the property is crucial wetlands, the precious Little River is nearby and the Common Pasture is very dependent on what goes on in this development.      In addition, the Little River Bike Path and the Little River Nature Trail are right next door.

The first thing we need to see is the conservation restriction enacted on the thirty-odd acres that Oleo Trust was suppose to have deeded.

Then we can see if they are full of ‘hot air’ or really mean what they say*.

They have also made the following statement:

“Our customers are buying much more than just a house. They are buying a home, a community, and a particular lifestyle.”     Now in the context of the website, they are probably talking about the development itself.       Maybe I am reading something into it but hopefully, they will consider the community of Newburyport as part of their consideration.         More realistically, they do say, “The company specializes in building traditional style homes – Capes, Colonials, and Federals.”      It would be nice if they build something that goes with our City though of course, they are free to do what they want.

Regardless, they have committed the following,

Green & Company delivers quality homes …in distinctive neighborhoods in desirable towns chosen with care.”

I trust this means a development that ‘blends” into the greatness of Newburyport with minimal environmental impact.

We should all keep a watchful eye!

* They could walk away from all the restrictions and start ‘fresh’ in the permitting process and push for a larger development.(horrors)
